A few words about Mazarakata

The village is located five kilometers outside Argostoli and towards Pessada. In Mazarakata  you come across the Mazarakata Tombs, found in the early 20th century. The cemetery was excavated by accident by Colonel De Bosset searching for limestone to coat the roads. The cemetery, which was found intact, is of great importance, it is the largest cemetery of the Mycenaean period the ruins of the Mycenaean era, witness to the culture that flourished in this region. Many reports were held in the books of Homer about Kefalonian cemeteries, and after what came to light, they seem rather confirmed. De Bosset donated some of the findings to Switzerland, the rest of the haul of Mycenaean vases and small art crafts were shared out between the archaeological museums in Athens and Argostoli.
